On March 18th Ryan Giroux, a member of the Hammerskins White Supremacist group, went on a violent rampage killing one innocent person and wounding five others. This individual and his associates are notorious for corrupting many aspects of Heathen practice for advancing their white nationalist agenda by grossly dishonorable means including, most shamefully, the hallowed Hammer of Thor. Such foul deeds are unquestionably wrong in the eyes of Heathens everywhere.
We, the members of Heathens United Against Racism, denounce Giroux, his associates, and any others who assisted him in perpetrating his terrible actions. We are appalled at his and their twisting of the Hammer of Thor, a symbol of protection for all in Midgard, into a symbol of bloody-handed slaughter. We stand, as a community, against all who would try to co-opt our practices just as the Nazis once did to support racist, fascist, or otherwise bigoted agendas. Such people are unquestionably unwelcome in our community and any who give them aid, shelter, or otherwise enable their bigotry are equally unwelcome in our hearths, rites, and events.
We offer our most sincere and heartfelt condolences to the victims of his horrific acts, their families, and the community he assaulted. We stand with you in this time of terrible tragedy and will do whatever we can to help heal the harms inflicted. We pledge our support, our work, and whatever else is asked of us for providing relief for those on the receiving end of Giroux’s attacks.
We call on all Heathens and Pagans to join us in standing for a Heathenry that is all-inclusive, genuinely tolerant, unquestionably opposed to bigotry, and rejects all who would co-opt our spiritual practice to advance their narrow-minded, dead-end, hateful agendas along with those who enable their continued presence. We stand with those who boldly oppose such deeds and will do everything we can to help you in our common struggle.(3) We ask all to join us in ejecting anyone who stand for a racialist corruption of Heathen practice from all parts of our community. We promise our support and our labor in doing whatever we can to assist in providing aid, relief, and comfort for the victims, their loved ones, and the people of Mesa, Arizona.
